ASP.NET is often pigeon-holed as a platform suitable
only for writing boring line of business applications
and web sites. Explore how this is absolutely not the
case with a walk through the development of a real-life
ASP.NET AJAX based game. We'll focus on topics relevant
to building internet scale Facebook applications such
as threading, asynchronous architectures, data models,
and Facebook API calls.

today? What's coming in the year ahead?

| Description: |
|
Silverlight 2 was officially released on October 13,
2008. In this presentation we will review the basics of
Silverlight and evaluate its current status.
How does Silverlight compare to plain-HTML, AJAX, Flash/Flex
and WPF? What kind of applications is it suited for? Video?
Banner ads? Games? Line of business apps? We'll look at
some example Silverlight applications, including Microsoft's
"Patient
Journey" health services demo app. We'll walk
though development of a simple Silverlight app using Blend
and Visual Studio 2008.
Background: Silverlight is a browser plug-in similar
to Flash. It has a rich vector-based graphics system built
on top of a subset of the .NET runtime environment, running
inside the browser. The UI is specified with declarative
markup written in XAML, which has similarities to HTML.
Code-behind can be done in standard JIT-compiled .NET
languages like C# and VB.NET. It offers the opportunity
for existing .NET developers to write rich web applications
similar to Flash and Flex, but using familiar languages,
class libraries and development tools.
